MCH July Newsletter

Updated: Sep 24, 2023

With the sun beating down in July and all of the fun outdoor activities going on, it is a good time to be reminded that more people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer each year than all other cancers combined, and most skin cancer is associated with sun exposure. Wearing sunscreen can help lower your cancer risk and here are a few tips to remember:

  • Choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater

  • Choose broad spectrum protection (filters out UVA & UVB rays)

  • Choose water resistant sunscreen and make sure you are reapplying at a minimum every two hours or after being in the water

  • Don't forget to cover up with lightweight clothing and a hat

If you can't remember the last time that you saw your doctor, or if you have a spot on your skin that seems a little suspicious, it's time to make that call and schedule an appointment! Early detection is key.

Hang out in the AC and get some great movement with chair yoga! The Council Grove Senior Center meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month from 11-11:30am and the White City senior center meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 10:30-11:00am. Everyone is welcome to join us for some great movement.

Health Wise Lunch Bunch meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month and in July, Nick French from Accord Hospice, will be talking about how hospice services work. Nick is a great presenter and I have learned so much about hospice that I didn't know. You will find his information to be a great resource. Lunch is $6 and you do need to reserve your spot. You can call 620-767-6811 ext. 148 or email szeigler@mrcohosp.com to reserve a spot.

We had a great day for disc golf and with 46 golfers, we were only one team shy of having a full roster! The weather was perfect and we were able to share the park with a swim event, so as you can imagine--it was a busy day! The golfers enjoyed a lunch from Knuckle Sandwich shop and they were generous with their raffle money and went home with some great prizes from our sponsors! The money raised will go towards the 3D Mammography machine, as we are definitely getting closer to this big purchase!
